Back to school getting to know you activity will have students using music and their favorite songs to describe themselves to their peers. In this writing activity, students will choose 5 songs that they feel best describe them and add them to their playlist. After choosing their songs, they will be prompted to write a paragraph explaining why they've chosen each song using lyrics as textual evidence. As a teacher, you will get a glimpse of their writing but you will also learn about them as individuals. This lesson is made using Google Slides and is great for in-person, distance, or hybrid learning. There is no prep needed in this activity!

Best for:

This activity can be used for students in 5th grade through 12th grade!

What teachers are saying:

My students LOVED this activity and I loved seeing them share things about themselves that were a little different than the generic "get to know me" activities.

— Lily P.

I used this as a first day of school activity for my sophomores. I have used all of their song choices to create a class playlist while they're working.

— Theresa m.

This was such a fun way to get to know my students better and learn more about their music choices!
